100 fined in blitz on litter and dog mess in Carlisle

More than 100 litter louts and dog owners who left mess in Carlisle have been fined in a blitz on dirty streets.

The city council wants to clean up in 2014 and has relaunched the Love Where You Live campaign.

As part of the continuing crackdown on litter, fly tipping and dog fouling, they released figures for the past eight months, showing more than 100 fixed penalty tickets had been issued and 14 people were taken to court.

Elsie Martlew, responsible for the environment with the city council, said they were aware the problem could get worse over the winter months.

“We want to encourage dog owners to clean up after their dog as well as reminding everyone of the penalties if they don’t,” she said.

As part of the scheme, the council enforcement wardens are handing out ‘rewards’ to dog walkers seen clearing up after their animals.

Everyone seen making an effort will be offered the chance to be entered into a prize draw to win a £50 vouchers for Pets at Home.

The raffle will be drawn at the beginning of each month from now until May. Margaret Stalker was the first winner after she was given a raffle ticket at Dale End Park, Old Harraby.

She said there was a problem with dog fouling in the park. “I always clean up after my dog,” she said.

“It is nice to reward responsible dog owners and I am looking forward to spending the voucher.”

Reports of fly tipping and dog fouling across Cumbria trebled in recent months thanks to an app which lets people file on-the-spot reports.

Since the smart phone app was launched last October, there were 30 reports of fly tipping in less than a month, compared to seven last year, and 26 of dog fouling, compared to 10.

The ‘grot spot’ campaign was launched on October 4 and has proved popular with people quick to report littering incidents.

A report compiled by Allerdale Council also showed 10 people reported general ‘street cleaning’ issues, thanks to a new form being piloted this year.

The software, which was developed by the council’s ICT team, uses GPS technology.

People can report grotty areas and anyone seen dropping litter, not clearing up after their dogs and fly tipping by calling 01228 817559 or email lovewhereyoulive@carlisle.gov.uk.

People can be fined up to £80 for littering, fly tipping or don’t clean up dog mess. The fine can rise to £2,500 if the case goes to court.

Have your say

Continuing crackdown from the Council… Yet only 100 fixed penalty tickets issued in 8 months. Eight months.

County Durham & newspaper Northern echo announced, that alone, in November 2013 - That they issued 107 fines . That's in only in one month..

There is NO excuse for those guilty ...

Only £80 for littering, fly tipping or don’t clean up dog mess. The fine can , should in my opinion, rise to £2,500
