The Government has today announced the cash, which has been released following the city’s unsuccessful bid to a pilot area for retail guru and TV star Mary Portas.

The money will be used to help improve the appearance of the city centre, spruce up vacant shops and improve signage in the city centre.

Following such a high level of interest in the Portas Pilot, housing minister Mark Prisk said the Government was determined that no town centre would be left behind.

MPs were therefore asked to put their Town Team forward for a share of funding.

All successful teams, including Carlisle City Council will be awarded £10,000 to help fund improvements.

The city will also be able to access to a support package from the Association of Town Centre Management.

The announcement has today been welcomed by Carlisle MP John Stevenson.

“I am delighted that Carlisle has been given this money. Any development to our city centre which improves the shopping and visitor experience would certainly benefit Carlisle,” he said.

“The minister is keen to be kept up to date with how town teams are taking forward their plans and I will certainly be supportive of progress which is made in our city.”

Colin Glover, deputy leader of the city council and portfolio holder for economy and enterprise, said: “We’re delighted that our bid was successful.

“It will help us build on our support for the city centre and will help us develop some ongoing projects which will make a difference.

“We are committed to supporting local businesses and the funding will support our aims to improve the look of the city centre.

This will include working with landlords and letting agents to improve the look of vacant shops, as well as the installation of interpretative signage.”
