HUNDREDS of people flocked to Carlisle Cathedral to watch television singing sensation Andrew Johnston in action.

Andrew was performing in a lunchtime concert at the cathedral and his appearance on ITVs Britain’s Got Talent had a massive effect on attendance.
Members of the national press, television stations and radio journalists turned up for Andrew’s performance – along with many people making their first visit to the cathedral.
The choir performed the music of FW Wadely and the climax was a solo by Andrew. The talented youngster earned a standing ovation from the audience by singing Pie Jesu, the song that impressed judges on the popular television talent show.
Two of Andrew’s biggest fans are Laura Johnson and Sophie Ritson.
Laura, 15, said: “This is the first time that we have come to the cathedral to see any kind of music and it was amazing.
“Andrew was wonderful and I think this is probably the only place you are going to be able to see him for free.
“ I think he will be very expensive to watch one day.”
Sophie, also 15, said: “I watched him on Britain’s Got Talent round at Laura’s and I was trying not to cry.
“It was the same today.
“He sang with a choir and then on his own and he was amazing.”
Margaret Graham, Pam Smith and Anne Ward, from Stanwix, and their friend Heather Kilpatrick, from Parlklands Village, all came to watch the latest singing sensation.
Heather said: “We came to support Andrew.
“It was very moving watching him on the television and it was just as moving today. He has the voice of an angel.”
Margaret said: “Some of us help out in the shop in the cathedral so we have heard Andrew sing before.
“To see him performing in a setting as beautiful as the cathedral is something special.”
The Very Rev Mark Boyling, Dean of Carlisle Cathedral, said: “We had far more people in today than we usually would have.
“It shows that this kind of publicity can generate interest in what we are doing all year round.
“We have a very talented choir and we perform all the time.
“It was nice to see so many people here today enjoying the music.”
Andrew’s mother, Morag Brannock, said: “Every time I see him sing it is amazing.
“To see so many people here watching him is just fantastic and the support he has had has been incredible.”
Andrew will have to wait until next month to find out whether or not he has made it through to the next round of the television talent show.

Have your say
Andrew, talent and ability go hand in hand. What sets you apart is your determination to rise above those who condemn you, who want to see you fail. You have achieved something by going on Britain's Got Talent. Not winning on the night is only half the story - talent shows are just that - they depend on popularity votes and they don't reflect the true talent you have! So I hope you'll wipe away the tears on the night and look to the future!
