Carlisle café culture given boost

Foxes Café Lounge, which is set to open in Abbey Street, will bring a taste of the continent to Carlisle with healthy, pro-vegetarian menus and a variety of performances.
Owners Ben, Cru and Paul Fox are initially opening the venue as a coffee shop.
Then the brothers plan to bring in a full menu soon after opening and have submitted their licence application to the city council which, when approved, will allow them to serve alcohol and hold live performances.
Ben, who has previously worked as a modern dancer in Germany and taught at Carlisle Art College, said: “The building is on two levels and in the evening we can keep it as a bar/restaurant on one level and use the other for different things.
“It will be anything goes with speed dating nights, performances, poetry evenings, and I’m going to try and get a salsa or a swing dance teacher as well.”
The café will offer opportunities for local and professional performers to showcase their talents.
“We are going to have an art gallery on one level with one wall devoted to art so that artists can promote and sell their work,” said Ben.
“I used to teach up at the art college.
“We’ve got good collaborations with them and we can have student showcases.
“It’s about promoting artists and giving them opportunities to perform and showcase their work and express themselves.”
It is hoped that the café will also be able to host a film night once a week, screening alternative cinema as part of a few regular evenings that will be intermingled with one-off events.
And Ben said that they’ve received a lot of support for their plans from the local community.
“Everyone we talk to is really excited about it and they’re saying that it’s what Carlisle needs.
“It’s hard enough to get it established as a coffee shop let alone all the greater stuff we want to do, but it makes it much more interesting and hopefully it is something that will benefit the whole city.”

I think foxes is brilliant, I was initially disappointed when the old place closed as I used to go there a lot but Foxes is much better, the guys in there treat you like a friend as opposed to a paycheck if that makes sense, and the food and drinks are soo nice!!! The only problem I can see them happening in the future is there not being enough room for everyone in there!!
Brill place and I love going :DView all 10 comments on this article
