£800 lets Scouts go on camp

YOUNG Cubs and Scouts are getting ready for summer camp after receiving a grant of almost £800 to help buy materials and equipment.

The 1st Carlisle Scout Group currently has 23 members aged eight to 14, mainly from the Wigton Road area.

Last year the club, which meets every Friday night at Trinity Church, celebrated its 100th birthday.

In the past, like most Scout groups, members would look forward to heading off on an annual summer camp.

But more recently, due to a lack of equipment and funding, the Scouts have only been able to dream of taking part in this kind of adventure.

But all that is about to change thanks to the Castle ward neighbourhood forum, which recently awarded them grant funding of £774.

The cash has been used to buy three giant tents, several lanterns, cooking equipment and camping stoves.

Scout leader Neal Fisher is now in the process of planning the first summer camp in years and said it could take them into the Lake District, or even further afield.

“This grant is much-needed and will go a long way. We were delighted when we received word, especially with it being such a large amount. They are all really looking forward to testing it out,” he said.

The 1st Carlisle Scout Group is also opening its doors to new members. It meets every Friday from 7pm to 8.30pm.

Activities vary, from learning practical skills, such as fire safety, to taking part in outdoor adventure tasks. Call Neal on 07876 540985 for further details.
