Scheme to improve lives on Harraby set to launch
Last updated at 11:50, Saturday, 15 November 2008
A scheme aimed at improving the lives of residents on one of Carlisle’s biggest estates is being launched on Monday.
Together We Can Improve The Community of Harraby, which is aimed at all age groups, involves local authorities and a host of other agencies.
It will run for five days and includes health and crime prevention advice sessions, organised clean-ups and a road safety presentation.
The event begins with Cyril Weber, chair of the Carlisle Local Committee, visiting Ali’s Breakfast Club at Inglewood School on Monday morning.
Throughout the day staff working for the county council, city council and the Carlisle Housing Association will carry out a giant clean-up targeting ‘grot-spots’.
That theme continues the following day when a youth offending team will remove graffiti while on Wednesday skips will be left on Arnside Road and Whinsmoor Drive to allow residents to dump rubbish.
A Streetsafe operation will be carried out on Wednesday and Thursday with police, fire and rescue crews, CHA, Sure Start and other staff going round and knocking on doors and allowing householders to raise issues with them.
Those days will also see health drop-in sessions taking place at St Elizabeth’s Church with advice being offered on ways to stop smoking, sexual health and other matters. A road safety awareness session involving the Harraby youth club will take place at the Harraby community centre on Thursday night – and that venue will stage a regular neighbourhood forum meeting at 10.30am on Friday.
