Police officers had to take refuge in their car after fireworks were hurled into a bonfire in Carlisle.
Two officers were called to Dowbeck Road on Wednesday night after reports that youths were throwing fireworks at passers-by.
A force spokesman said that when police arrived at the scene all the youths had disappeared, but a quantity of fireworks had been thrown into a bonfire and were exploding in all directions.
One appliance from the fire and rescue service was called out at 9.30pm to extinguish the blaze.
Two fireworks were then thrown at the police car, although no one was seen in the area.
The spokesman said they may have been thrown from a nearby garden or neighbouring road. He said the officers were unhurt and that the vehicle was not damaged.
Police are appealing for anyone with information about the incident to call 0845 33 00 247.
