WALKERS turned out in force on Sunday to support a west Cumbrian musician’s charity appeal.
The walk, around Ennerdale Lake, formed part of the annual fundraising weekend in aid of the Charlie and Kathleen Dunnery Children’s Fund.
Francis Dunnery set up the charity in memory of his parents after his mother died in 2002. The charity has raised £50,000 for a huge range of good causes including the children’s ward at West Cumberland Hospital, school books, music rooms, play equipment, toys for needy families at Christmas, meningitis research, outreach work to steer young people away from drugs.
The event attracted 150 walkers, including Francis, despite the bad weather.
Francis staged a concert in Egremont Market Hall, on Saturday night and was joined on stage by stars including Motorhead guitarist Phil Campbell, Steve Nardelli of The Syn, and Chris Difford of Squeeze.
There was a golf event at Seascale, with 30 players turning out to compete.
Proceeds from the walk, concerts and the golf are still being calculated but will be added to cash raised by a celebrity auction and donated to a local children’s charity.
Beneficiaries of the charity include schoolchildren in Francis’s hometown of Egremont. St Bridget’s School was given £4,000 towards a new arts room.
