They received the accolade from the Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership for working with other groups including Copeland Council.

They have been key to the regeneration of the castle, where new lighting and revamped grounds mean it is no longer the magnet for underage drinking and antisocial behaviour it once was. Copeland Council’s parks department is responsible for the general maintenance of the castle grounds and has worked closely with the Friends to bring about improvements.

Councillor Margaret Woodburn, of the Friends of Egremont Castle, said: “This is fantastic news. The award recognises the work of the Friends and also the commitment of the partners who work with us.”

Chairman of the West Cumbria Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership, Inspector Joe Murray, said: “The Friends are real local heroes who have made an outstanding and ongoing contribution to tackling crime and disorder in their community. Working with partners like Copeland Council, they have made a real difference to the castle grounds, the town and the people who live there.”

Councillor Hugh Branney added: “How wonderful to see that the castle grounds are now being used by more residents and attracting tourists who continue to recognise the historic and recreational value of the site. Congratulations to all those involved in this development which is another example of what can be achieved when a team of dedicated local people work in partnership with other agencies.”

Has the snow and ice spoiled your day?

Yes. The roads and pavements are dangerous and the weather has caused havoc.

No. It isn't that bad and I can't see what all the fuss is about.
