Free travel for injured war vets call

A MARYPORT councillor is campaigning for free bus travel in Allerdale for injured veterans.
Carni McCarron-Holmes put a motion to Maryport Town Council this week to back free bus travel for any residents in the borough who were injured while serving in wars.
The move comes after London Mayor Boris Johnston announced that all injured war veterans in London are to receive free travel on the capital’s transport network, whether they are residents or visitors, in recognition of their service to the country.
Mrs McCarron-Holmes said residents in Allerdale should receive similar treatment.
She said: “Boris Johnston announced that the Greater London Council has decided they would introduce concessionary travel for all injured service personnel. We have so many people in the borough who are injured personnel. It is high time someone instigated this locally. It was passed by Maryport Town Council successfully this week.
“The council will be asking Allerdale Council to consider giving free travel for injured personnel in the borough.
“It is coming up to the Remembrance Day Services, and it would be good to support our own local people in the borough. I am hoping other town councils will follow suit.”
