Traffic warden attacked ticketing biker
Last updated at 09:53, Wednesday, 20 August 2008
A WOMAN traffic warden was attacked on Carlisle’s busiest shopping street by an angry biker as she ticketed his motorcycle.
Stunned shoppers watched in shock as the warden was allegedly punched twice in the face on English Street.
In further disgraceful scenes, eyewitness reports suggest some passers-by even encouraged the man as the confrontation took place – while nobody stepped in to intervene.
The biker then rode off from the scene.
Police later arrested a 37-year-old man on suspicion of assault and appealed for witnesses to contact them as they carried out an investigation.
They also condemned any attack on public servants, describing the violence as “completely unacceptable.”
It is understood the warden did not suffer any serious injuries. The attack happened at about 4pm on Friday.
A police spokesman said: “The female traffic warden was issuing a fixed penalty notice on a motorcycle, apparently illegally parked outside the NatWest Bank.
“The owner returned and allegedly punched her twice in the face before riding away from the scene.
“A 37-year-old man from Carlisle has been arrested on suspicion of assault by beating and has been placed on police bail until August 24 pending further enquiries.
“Assaults on public servants as they carry out their duties are completely unacceptable. Police would urge any witnesses to come forward. Anyone who saw anything or has any information should contact us.”
Phone Carlisle CID on 0845 3300247.
