MORE than 400 youngsters in West Cumbria have been spending their summer holidays getting a taste for life at college – and getting paid into the bargain.
They have all been taking part in the summer learning programme running at Lakes College West Cumbria.
The three-week scheme started on July 21 and came to an end on Friday.
It aimed to give 16 to 18-year-olds the chance to learn new skills while earning £50 a week.
Students have been able to try their hand at courses such as hairdressing, beauty therapy, art and design, catering, joinery, brickwork, motor vehicle repairs, sport and drugs awareness.
Cath Richardson, principal at Lakes College West Cumbria said “Our summer learning programme has been a fantastic opportunity for young people in the area, giving them experience and allowing them to see what the college has to offer.”
Todd Bennett, 16, from Whitehaven went along.
He said: “It has been better than sitting at home.
“I have learnt a lot and have met lots of new people.”
