Churches to join forces
Last updated 11:43, Friday, 08 August 2008
TWO of Workington’s oldest non-conformist churches will merge in October.
Trinity Methodist Church will combine with its South William Street neighbour, the United Reformed Church, to become the United Church.
The new congregation will be jointly led by the Rev Nicola Reynolds, of the Methodist church, and the Rev Alistair Smeaton, who leads the URC congregations in Workington, Cockermouth and Harrington.
Under the new arrangement, Mr Smeaton will become lead minister and Mrs Reynolds will become the associate minister.
The new congregation will be based in the URC premises, while the Trinity Methodist Church will be converted into a church community centre.
The merger, the result of 18 months of planning, was confirmed on Tuesday.
A joining service to be held on October 5 will begin in the Trinity Methodist Church and then move across the street to the United Church where the service will conclude.
Both buildings will remain in use.
