Wilfred and Beatrice Waring, of Milburn Croft, received a card from the Queen to mark their platinum wedding anniversary on Wednesday.

The couple have spent most of their married life in the village.

They met while working at a textile factory in Huddersfield in Yorkshire.

Mr Waring, 94, revealed that he was first attracted to Mrs Waring, neé Jowett, by her legs!

The couple were married in a register office in Huddersfield on August 6, 1938, and moved to west Cumbria 10 years later, when Mr Waring took a job in a textile factory on what is now Dunmail Park, in Maryport Road.

Mrs Waring, 88, took a job in the same factory as a winder but left when she had children.

The couple have three daughters – Rita, 66, Susan, 61 and Carol, 57, six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mr Waring was a sergeant in the RAF during World War Two and his duties took him to Norway, India, Sicily, Tripoli and Benghazi.

He also met Field Marshal Montgomery during the desert campaign.

Mr Waring’s hobbies included stamp-collecting and wine-making, while Mrs Waring enjoyed gardening. She was also a self-taught hairdresser and seamstress.

The couple, who also loved dancing, celebrated their anniversary with friends and family at the Melbreak Hotel, Crossbarrow.

Both agreed that the secret of a long and happy marriage was never go to bed on an argument.
