Vandals knock over headstones in city graveyard

Headstones and flower pots have been knocked down and damaged by vandals in a Carlisle graveyard.
Six headstones were upended, breaking several from their bases, in an attack on Upperby Cemetery earlier this week.
Several more headstones were moved around, and some flower pots placed on the graves were knocked over.
Donald Haugh, whose son Gordon is buried in a plot close to where the incident took place, said: “It’s horrible. They have done one then missed one, then done one and missed one, so it’s random. Those poor families have to come up here and face this – people whose loved ones are buried here. My son is buried two or three plots further down. God knows what would have happened if somebody related to me had their grave damaged like this.”
Sergeant Mark Gilroy of Cumbria Police said: “This type of crime is unacceptable and we will do all we can to identify the offenders. We are urging members of the public to help by calling us if they saw anything suspicious in the area of the cemetery on Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.”
Call 0845 3300 247, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
