An historic estate near Cockermouth has gone on the market for £1.8 million.

High Dyke Estate was built by Robinson Mitchell, who pioneered selling livestock by auction.

He founded Mitchells Auction Company, which is still a thriving business in the town today.

The 255-acre estate was once home to Lady Ankarat, daughter of the Earl of Carlisle, before she died in a riding accident in 1943.

As well as a large house, there are cottages, an indoor arena, loose boxes, grazing land, and woodland. The estate is being sold with shooting rights.

Craig Brough, of H&H Land and Property, said: “Properties like these very rarely come to the open market, especially ones with shooting rights.

“This is a ring fenced estate, which provides both excellent investment and commercial opportunities for the new owner.”
