Keswick Cricket Club’s Women’s Cricket Festival day proved to be a rip-roaring success.

The sun shone, more than 50 women and girls took part in a series of games throughout the afternoon and many more people turned out to enjoy the event, and to socialise around the ground and the pavilion on Sunday.

The barbecue, organised and run by Martin Black, was a great success with a constant flow of customers all afternoon, while a cake stall in the pavilion tea room was immensely popular and all contributed greatly to Keswick’s funds.

All in all, this was a fantastic day out for all the family in an enjoyable, enthusiastic, energetic, safe and friendly environment.

Greater involvement and space in clubs for family events such as the Women’s Cricket Festival and also the amazingly successful “All Stars” programme for junior cricketers in the five-eight years old bracket, are important at a time when open age senior men’s cricket faces many challenges.

Principal organiser Chinty Turnbull who, with her husband Ian, have been behind the massively successful renaissance of women’s cricket at Keswick said: “Sharon Hodgson and many others did loads to help organise the event.

“Ian and I both felt really good walking home after the cricket.

“The entire event, the team effort involved and the lovely comments and smiling faces made it all worthwhile.

“It was a great day and I have had lots of lovely comments since. All of the women in our team were very proud to be there and be part of it.”

Chinty now wants to build on the success of the festival with a similar event due to take place next summer.

But in the meantime any women who live in the surrounding area, and who perhaps took part in Sunday’s festival, are welcome to join the regular Keswick’s women practice sessions at Fitz Park every Wednesday evening from 6pm.

“We would love you to join our team,” said Chinty.
