Designing the ultimate Rallycross car is a unique challenge, but now you can get an under the bonnet eye view of how it's done with a series of videos from Ford Performance.
It gives you the opportunity to follow team of engineers that helped design and optimise the Ford Focus RS RX driven by Ken Block and Andreas Bakkerud in the FIA World Rallycross series. The crew worked together to optimise four key elements of the design: the wing, suspension, driveshaft, and cockpit.
To determine the best design for the wing, over 100 different iterations were tested using Computational Fluid Dynamics software. For the suspension, Ford Performance used a Kinematics and Compliance rig to collate data to find the optimum set-up. To understand the potential stresses that a driveshaft would have to cope with, the team created a "heat map" to perfect the best design. And personalised cockpits were created for both Ken Block and Andreas Bakkerud based on their personal preferences. Go to http://bit.ly/2l4vBE9, and you can see all this for yourself.
