SPOOK HUNT: Mel James, left, and Mandy Oakes from Lakeland Paranormal Investigations in the beer cellar of The Steam Packet in Workington with owners Paul Rosewarne, back, and Ajay Patel

Mandy Oakes, 41, of Windsor Road, set up Lakeland Paranormal Investigations and has been inundated with requests from businesses to discover what supernatural beings inhabit their buildings.

Mrs Oakes, who runs the business from her home, is a medium.

She said her ability to communicate with spirits started as a child, when she was visited by a ghost called Bobby, with her parents thinking it was just an imaginary friend.

She decided in November to pursue her passion for the supernatural by setting up her own company.

She said: “We always go down the scientific approach and we don’t do dark things like ouija boards.

“It’s professional and can be serious, but we try and keep things light-hearted.”

Mrs Oakes and her team of eight investigators have been to Workington’s Steam Packet Inn on Stanley Street and the Royal Oak, on Pow Street and Winder Hall in Lorton, near Cockermouth.

Paul Rosewarne, 54, owner of the Steam Packet Inn, said there were a number of unexplained incidents at his pub, which he has run for 17 years, including having his dinner knocked from his hand and one customer who said he saw a sea captain walking around when there was no-one else in the pub.

He invited Mrs Oakes and her team to the pub for an investigation and they used equipment including electromagnetic field detectors, night vision cameras and voice recorders.

A number of spooky incidents happened on the night. Mrs Oakes described the spirit of a young girl who was down in the cellar, which matched the description another medium made in the pub about 10 years ago.

A gas bottle exploded in the cellar, a flash of green light lit up one room and Mrs Oakes picked up on a “negative energy” in a guest bedrooms.

Mrs Oakes has been invited back by the Steam Packet Inn for more investigations later this year and will also visit Workington’s Carnegie Theatre.

why do people have to break everything down and analyse it, why can't things just be what they are? us at L.P.I ALWAYS look for the most rational answer to what we find and experience. We never claim anything to be paranormal, if something is ODD then it simply gets put into our "interesting" box until someone can offer a good answer for it whether it be scientific or not. please do not tar and feather us with the same brush as the charlatans that make a stack of money off the vulnerable.
