Longtown woman's 'animal' hats selling across the world

An artist has found homes for hundreds of ‘Stray Hats’ – her unique animal-themed headgear which is selling all over the world.
Illustrator Emma Goodman discovered her knack for making the colourful creations while customising a gift for a friend.
She now hand-makes the hats with furry cat ears in varying colours for hundreds of buyers and has also experimented with rabbit ears, mouse ears and bear ears.
The cat variety has proved most popular, said Emma, who has proudly shipped her cosy hats to new homes across the world.
The 28-year-old, of Albert Street, Longtown, has sold more than 200 so far this winter with most buyers in New Zealand and Germany.
She said: “I sell the hats mostly during winter and have been really busy this year.”
But the hats are also popular on this side of the world and Emma’s dad Mike is a big fan.
She said: “I made my dad a hat with blue cat ears which he wears to Carlisle United games.
“People often stop him and ask him where he got the hat from.”
She added: “The hats are unique but not too ‘out there’ so they are really practical too. I think that is what people like about them.
“I have sold quite a few to buyers in Bosnia.
“I was getting loads of orders from a specific area of Germany recently.
“Someone had bought a hat and then all their friends wanted one too.”
She is now in talks with Made In Cumbria with a view to selling ‘Stray Hats’ at trade and craft fairs across the county.
Most of her hats are sold on internet auction site ebay and through her own online shop www.neoncola.co.uk.
She added: “All the feedback I get is really positive.”
One buyer from Sydney, said: “I bought one of your kitty-ears hats recently and I just wanted to drop you an email to let you know I am very happy with the purchase.
“I wore the hat all through a recent overseas trip to the USA and all through Japan. People’s reactions were priceless around the world.”
Emma added: “I would just like to thank Longtown Post Office for the support and help they’ve given me.”
The hats are priced at £15 each and come in one size for adults.
