Former Premier League striker Grant Holt began his football career with Harraby Catholic Club. A new generation is coming through the club's youth ranks.

Harraby Mini Dribblerz is a training class for girls and boys aged two to six. It was founded three months ago by Charmaine Lakin, who also runs Harraby Catholic Club's under-10 team.

Mini Dribblerz is designed to teach football skills and even more important things. Like being part of a team - and what colours are called. Charmaine says: "It's team-building. And for some of the younger ones, the colours. 'Does everyone know what yellow is?'

"Passing the ball is teaching them to share. If they're unsure what to do we'll work with them individually. If someone's shy we get the others to encourage them."

More than 20 children attend the Wednesday sessions on the all-weather pitches behind Harraby Community Centre on Edgehill Road, at a cost of just £2 per week. Charmaine is happy to welcome more youngsters.

"Children from all over Carlisle attend. It has become so popular we have another coach, Dougie Hewitt, helping. We award man of the match trophies. If they win it they walk away with a massive smile. They keep it with them at nursery, swimming classes. Parents send you pictures of their kids with it. We get parents watching the sessions. They love it."

Local business Mick Nolan Property Services has donated money for Mini Dribblerz T-shirts. Last month a sponsored walk raised more than £300. "They were so well-behaved," says Charmaine.

Perhaps this is due to Mini Dribblerz' policy on discipline. "If they're being daft they're told to sit on the bench. Then they think 'I won't do that again.'

"We want kids of all ages to enjoy the sport. You never know, we might have a mini Beckham training with us. One little boy, Isaac Archibald, is only three and he's got unbelievable skill. Another boy, when he started it was like he had two left feet. Now he's really improved and grown in confidence."

Mini Dribblerz takes place on Wednesdays, 5-6pm.
