T he Be atles : When the Beatles first appeared on stage at the ABC Lonsdale, Carlisle, in February 1963 they were fourth on the bill to Helen Shapiro and had just hit the top spot with Please Please Me . On their return visit the following November they had created a frenzy with She Loves You .

I Want To Hold Your Hand was only a week away from the record shops and eternal fame was theirs.

J im my Glass : On May 8, 1999, Carlisle United pulled off a miraculous escape from non-league football when goalkeeper Jimmy Glass scored the unlikeliest of wins in the final minute of the game against Plymouth at Brunton Park.

The goalkeeper had moved up into the goalmouth for the late corner, and when the ball landed at his feet he put the ball into the net watched by an record crowd.

D rought : 1984 proved to be a better summer than many dared hope for and, as the warm weather continued, so water levels in the lakes started to fall.

Haweswater receded and revealed the lost village of Mardale Green which was covered in 1940 as a result of the Haweswater Act, which allowed Manchester Corporation to create a reservoir to supply water.
