Next superstore to bring jobs boost for Carlisle

Work has begun on a Next Home store in Carlisle where new jobs will be created.

Builders moved onto the site at Kingstown this week.

The Next Home store will open in a unit that was formerly occupied by Currys at Kingstown Retail Park. A spokeswoman for Next Home today confirmed that the store should be open by the end of August.

She said: “At present the store is scheduled to open at the end of August. “Recruitment has not started for the store as yet so I cannot confirm the number of jobs the store will create at this stage.”

Rumours circulating about a coffee chain opening in the store are not true. The spokeswoman added: “There is not a coffee concession in the plans.”

The Next Home brand sells furniture, sofas, curtains and blinds, rugs, mirrors, lighting as well as accessories. Next already has two stores in the city centre – one on English Street and one in The Lanes. The news is a welcome boost to the city following news that department store Hoopers is pulling out of the city after six years.

Eighty-three Hoopers staff will lose their jobs as well as those working for the concessions.

The store, which is currently holding a closing down sale, is expected to shut on June 23.

Smaller upmarket stores are also being hit. Jaeger in Green Market is to shut on June 9 and Chapman’s Furniture Store on The Viaduct is also closing down.

Benetton also left the city this year as did The Disney Store, Past Times, Goldsmiths and Hawkins Bazaar. But the news isn’t all doom and gloom.

Unemployment in the city this week showed that joblessness was falling more slowly than elsewhere in the county. Debenhams is ploughing cash into its store in The Lanes with a multi-million development due to start on May 28.

And the fashion retailer Jack & Jones is also moving into The Lanes in the summer.
