The M6 approaching Carlisle and some city roads were already moving slowly as fans began arriving early for the Brunton Park clash with Leeds United.
Hundreds of fans travelling to the match combined with Rangers fans travelling back to Glasgow after losing their UEFA Cup Final match in Manchester as well as busy rush-hour traffic resulting in gridlock across the city.
Junctions 42 and 43 on the M6 were the worst affected, as were Warwick Road and London Road. A motorway sign at Penrith was warning of delays up to 90 minutes travelling north.
