rog1mc Where’s Gordon? Holcombe Moor Army training centre, high on the wild and windy Lancashire moors. As someone who grew up with Action Man and toy guns, playing soldiers with a real(ish) gun, pushed on by adrenalin and pride, was utterly invigorating. And it helped that the enemy didn’t fire back.

If Sarah’s spirit lives on in her pets, it also exists in her father’s day-to-day journeys around Cotehill. One of Des’s stories is called Monty and Tyler Take the Top Road. This road on the outskirts of her home village was informally christened by Sarah, along with such places as “the silver gate” and “Joss’s corner”. Around every corner, reminders. Des is surrounded by happy memories but they have acquired the habit of souring on contact with the present day.
