Google Street View hoax
A friend of mine was mortified to find herself pictured on Google Street View walking along with her daughter to school so I thought it would be a good idea to play a little practical joke.
I rang her up and the converstation went something like this:
Me (in rather silly voice): "Hello this is Peter Williams from Google Street View"
"Oh..hello"
"We were pleased to be able to photograph you in the street and would like to arrange a time to do some interior shots"
"Sorry?"
"We would like to bring the Google camera and do some pictures in your living room..."
"You want to take pictures in my home?"
It then dawned on me that in my eagerness I had dialed a wrong number and thoroughly confused some poor woman. Whoops.
It's a good job that I said "living room" rather than my original plan of "bathroom" or I might have been explaining this episode to Cumbria police rather than on this blog.
When I did ring my friend she rumbled me straight away.
Still, I suppose it won't be long before Google do start doing interior views - after all you can see quite a lot at people's windows already.
But for now wouldn't it be good to see Street View photography in these places:
- Inside historic attractions such as Carlilse castle.
- Along our coastline - on the beach and in boats
- On Cumbria's lakes. A camera could be fitted to boat on Windermere, for example.
- On popular Lakes walks such as Castle Rigg, High Street, Old Man of Coniston, etc
- Along Hadrian's Wall.
Any other suggestions?
