A classic music season

CARLISLE will welcome magnificent musicians from across Europe and the UK during The Sands Centre International Orchestral Concert Series.
The 2008/2009 season begins on Saturday, October 11 with the Moscow Philharmonic’s programme, which includes Rimsky Korsakov, Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky and Khachaturian.
The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic returns on November 14 under their new music director Vasily Petrenko, with young pianist Paul Lewis performing a programme of Beethoven and Brahms
In February the Russian State Philharmonic performs Rimsky Korsakov’s Easter Overture, Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6.
The Halle return to The Sands on March 28 under Edward Gardner, the music director of the English National Opera. Eminent American pianist Garrick Ohlsson is soloist for a programme of Elgar, , Beethoven and Sibelius.
On April 18 the BBC Philharmonic opens its programme with Haydn’s Mercury Symphony.
The season ends on May 22 with a visit from the Prague Symphony Orchestra playing Dvorak.
