College is in good shape for the new decade

AS WE move from one decade to another, it gives us a good chance to review the progress made at Lakes College West Cumbria over the first ten years of the 21st century.

Energus really making a name for itself

WOW! What a year 2009 was – who will forget swine flu, the horrendous floods and the start of the big freeze?

Students who know about long commutes

I HOPE its not too late to wish everyone a Happy New Year? I spent Christmas and New Year in Nepal trekking up to Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) at some 4200 metres where the temperatures were somewhat higher than those found in Cumbria on my return.

Year 9: Subject choices – or is it life choices?

WHEN you reach year nine, the last thing on your mind at the time is your future career. Well that was what I was doing. Taking a step at a time seemed to be the norm for my peers and myself.

Foundation degrees live up to their name

I AM a great supporter of opportunities for progression in learning, especially where individuals can get new skills, qualifications and recognition for achievement in the work-related environment.

Taking stock

AS THIS is the last of my columns to be published in 2009, it is a timely opportunity to look back over the past 12 months – and indeed the past 20 months of my time on the NDA’s nucleargraduate scheme.

A vote of confidence after a look into future

I WAS recently at the launch of a new report from Cogent, the Sector Skills Council covering the nuclear industry, called “Power People – The Civil Nuclear Workforce 2009-2025.” It is an important piece of work which looks at the skills need now and in the future, not only decommissioning but also new-build and defence.

Leading the way in providing nuclear skills

I RECENTLY returned from holiday in the southern United States during which I took the opportunity of visiting a large Community College within the State of Tennessee.

Celebrating past and looking to the future

SEPTEMBER is always one of the busiest months in a college so it is only now I can start to reflect on such a key month in the academic year. We are looking forward to a positive year with all our new and returning students. For our new students this is the start of their journey at Lakes College.

Confessions of a reluctant Yuppie

Copeland’s economy and jobs of the future

LAST month’s Cumbria Economic Bulletin paints an interesting picture of Copeland’s economy. Reflecting high pay in the nuclear industry, for those in work, Copeland has the highest gross weekly pay and the highest hourly pay than elsewhere in the county.

A new academic year, and soon a new government

SEPTEMBER has seen the start of a new academic year at the end of which there will be a new Government. By then current Government plans to transform 14-19 and adult skills provision will, subject to legislation currently going through Parliament, be in place.

Nigel Couzens - Head of skills and capability at the NDA

WHETHER it is the vagaries of the weather, the numerous festivals, events and shows, or simply just seeing more tourists around, it’s clear that the summer is well and truly underway here in West Cumbria.

Alex Stewart - Nuclear Graduate

IT HAS been quite some time since my last column and a lot has changed since then. I have now finished my placement at Springfields Fuels Ltd. in Preston, had the third of my training zones and made the move to Oxford to begin my secondment with the Environment Agency.

It's a nightmare. It will cripple my family

It's understandable. The taxes are needed and it's the only way to reduce consumption
