Carlisle Utd cruise to friendly victory at non-league Margate

Margate 0 Carlisle United 6: All that was missing were the training bibs as Carlisle put six past non-league Margate last night.

United would have been nowhere near little Hartsdown Park on the Kent coast were it not for Greg Abbott’s friendship with Margate boss and Welsh football legend Terry Yorath.

The match was more than just a reunion for the pair but Abbott won’t have learned too much about his players from this workout.

Because, let’s face it, he already knew Graham Kavanagh is still a class act who can run games from the middle of the park with his range of passing.

He already knew Cleveland Taylor and Joe Anyinsah have pace and energy to burn, capable of embarrassing far better defenders than Ryman Premier League Margate’s.

And he already knew Ian Harte’s free-kicks are among the deadliest weapons in the game, as the former Leeds defender showed with a superb strike early in the second half.

Still, it was a good night’s work as Carlisle passed the ball for fun against a Gate side who showed some nice touches but never looked like troubling the visitors.

Youngster Connor Tinnion helped himself to a first-half brace as Carlisle led 2-0 at the break. He opened the scoring with a 22nd-minute tap-in after keeper Pat Mullin could only parry Peter Murphy’s low effort from the edge of the box.

Tinnion’s second, on 31 minutes, was just as simple, slotting home after Anyinsah met Taylor’s cross with a clever backheel that Mullin did well to keep out.

Harte has carved out a career on spectacular free-kicks and he came up with an absolute beauty, arrowing a 30-yarder into the top corner, five minutes into the second half.

It was that good, even the home fans applauded.

Harte added his second from the penalty spot on 57 minutes following a handball.

Margate were packed with kids by this stage and couldn’t get the ball from United.

It was 5-0 on 69 minutes when big Gavin Rothery picked his spot from the edge of the box, giving substitute keeper Marc Beresford no chance.

Marc Bridge-Wilkinson completed the scoring 10 minutes from time with a cool finish after a cut-back from the right.

Carlisle – first half: Pidgeley, Kane, Keogh, Murphy, Horwood, Taylor, Kavanagh, Burns, Tinnion, Dobie, Anyinsah.

Second half: Collin, Raven, Livesey, Gowling, Harte, Thirlwell, Taiwo, Bridge-Wilkinson, Rothery, Madine, Robson.

Attendance: 454.
