Tom Miller says he will "relish" the challenge if fellow right-back Alex McQueen is handed a fresh chance with Carlisle United.

Miller has made the position his own so far this season, starting all 18 of the Blues' games so far.

But McQueen, who left the club in the summer, is currently back at Brunton Park trying to earn a new deal.

Manager Keith Curle has pledged to make a decision on the ex-Spurs man's future soon.

And Miller says he will aim to rise to the challenge of any extra competition for his place.

The 26-year-old said: "That's football, and even if Alex wasn't here there are players there who are potentially going to take your place.

"You can never sit back and just think you're safe in the team. You need to keep doing your job and doing it to the best of your ability.

"Alex is a good player. I know him well from last year and if he comes in it's competition for a place.

"It's a healthy environment, something I relish. I'll do my best and if it's good enough, I play.

"If it's not good enough in the gaffer's eyes, then I won't. It's as easy as that.

"It's the environment we're in. I enjoy that and look forward to it."

McQueen looks unlikely to get a further chance to impress Curle in a game this week as it appears United are not arranging a reserve friendly.

McQueen has featured in one second-string game against Burnley and is continuing to train with the squad.

Miller, meanwhile, says he is enjoying the "learning curve" of his role in Curle's unbeaten team this campaign.

The former Lincoln man said: "This season I've been concentrating on different aspects of my game that aren't natural to me.

"Because I've been playing centrally all my life, it's been a learning curve, but one I've enjoyed a lot.

"I feel I've given a good account of myself so far. It's just about adding things to make myself that complete full-back."
