Carlisle United's long unbeaten run was finally ended - by League Two's bottom side.

Josh Sheehan and Rhys Healey scored for Newport as the Blues were beaten for the first time this season.

It was a first defeat in 16 league games for Keith Curle's side as they were well below par at Rodney Parade.

And it was also the first time the promotion-chasing Cumbrians have failed to score in 2016/17.

Sheehan gave struggling County a second-minute lead.

After linking with Jazzi Barnum-Bobb down the right, Sheehan raced into the box to fire home a weak clearance by Macaulay Gillesphey.

It was a shock second-minute opener for Graham Westley's side but they were good value for their half-time advantage.

Carlisle were off-colour despite attempts in the first 10 minutes by Gillesphey and Jabo Ibehre, the latter volleying over the bar.

Newport were sharper in much of their play and fashioned further chances for Rhys Healey and Sheehan.

Shaun Miller narrowly failed to pounce on a loose ball on the stroke of half-time but United need to raise their game to maintain their unbeaten record.

Curle brought on Charlie Wyke and Reggie Lambe for the second half, replacing Ibehre and Shaun Miller, and Lambe shot wide as Carlisle raised their tempo.

Gillesphey and Luke Joyce then failed to convert half-chances while Michael Raynes had a penalty appeal waved away.

But Carlisle struggled to create further clear-cut openings, and then went further behind in the 71st minute.

After Danny Grainger's shot was blocked following a corner, Dan Butler broke for the hosts and fed Cardiff loanee Healey, who slotted past Gillespie.

Carlisle's keeper later saved from sub Tom Owen-Evans and Jennison Myrie-Williams went close as the Exiles threatened to increase their victory margin.

Westley's name was sung by the home fans as they recorded their first home league win since early March.
