Carlisle United star Nicky Adams has revealed that his season is over.

The winger, who suffered a knee injury in the Blues' 4-0 win against Yeovil, revealed the news on Twitter this morning.

United had hoped the injury which forced Adams to be substituted in the first half of Saturday's victory would not be serious.

The exact nature of the problem is yet to be confirmed, with Adams heading to London to see a consultant tomorrow.

But last season's multiple player of the year has already said his campaign was over.

Writing on his Twitter account, @nickyadams10, the 31-year-old said: "The beautiful game can be cruel at times.

"Those that know me know how much I love football and am truly heartbroken that my season is over.

"I leave with the boys in good form and touching distance of play offs. I know they can do it. Tin tin will be back."

Adams had to be helped off the pitch after suffering the injury in a challenge with Yeovil's Bevis Mugabi.

The news will come as a serious blow to United and boss Keith Curle, with Adams widely regarded as one of the Blues' most influential players.

On Monday night he narrowly missed out on the League Two player of the year award at the North West Football Awards as he was pipped by Accrington's Sean McConville.

Last season he was named in the division's team of the year and scooped a host of individual accolades at United's end of season awards dinner after a campaign when he was again one of the leading assists men in the fourth tier.

He has made 21 appearances this season after playing 48 times in his debut United campaign in 2016/17, when he also scored three goals.

Carlisle, who moved up to 14th in League Two on Saturday, said Adams' tweet was based on an "initial conversation" about the injury after he had an MRI scan on Saturday.

"We now have to wait for him to meet up with one of the club’s consultants in London tomorrow afternoon before we know the extent and detail of the injury,” manager Curle said.

United's manager said neither Adams nor Mugabi were to blame for the injury. "It's just one of those things that can happen in a game that involves contact," Curle said on United's website.
