Carlisle United have completed the signing of striker Richie Bennett from Barrow, subject to the clearance of all necessary paperwork.

The 26-year-old was the subject of a rejected bid from the Blues at the start of the month, with a Barrow club statement at the time saying he was "not for sale".

But, despite being offered an improved contract at Holker Street, Bennett has decided to move across Cumbria to United.

He now joins the Brunton Park outfit on a two-year deal, with an option of a further year.

"This is a player the manager has been tracking for a while and it's always nice when you finally get it over the line," joint assistant manager Lee Dykes said.

"He's progressed through the non-league circuit and scored goals every step of the way.

"He has attributes we feel will add to what we already have in the building and he's coming here really keen to do well.

"We think we've got ourselves a really good player and we're looking forward to working with him."

Prior to the signing of Bennett, United only had Shaun Miller and Hallam Hope as senior centre-forwards, so the signing will be a big boost to Carlisle's striker options with the kick-off to their League two campaign at home to Swindon 11 days away.

Barrow tonight announced: "We can confirm that Richie Bennett has left the club to join Carlisle United. We will release more details tomorrow."
