Keith Curle says Carlisle United will be ready to give as good as they get in a physical battle at Wycombe tomorrow having proved their mettle against the best in League Two.

The promotion-chasing Blues head to Adams Park aiming to build on Tuesday's impressive win against Doncaster.

Tomorrow's opponents are chasing a play-off place, and Curle expects an aerial contest against a side containing heavyweight striker Adebayo Akinfenwa.

But United's manager believes their midweek performance proves his team can stand up to any challenge.

Curle said: "It will be an aerial bombardment, there will be challenges, physical confrontations - and that's just from us.

"You find sometimes a team's strength can be their weakness. What you throw at us in ammunition, sometimes you don't like directly back at you.

"We've had a look at Wycombe's last few games, studied their key strengths and ingredients of their success. But we think we can be competitive. We will need to be.

"They've got threats, forward momentum and good players. But we're third in the league for a reason."

United's 2-1 victory against Donny, ending the leaders' 10-game unbeaten run, put fans in much better heart three days after the dismal 4-1 home defeat to Blackpool.

It means Carlisle go to Buckinghamshire still with a three-point gap above the play-off places.

Curle believes the manner of last weekend's defeat left his players under no illusions about the improvement needed - and was delighted with the response.

"There will be a few people that needed a reminder of what we're trying to build and create," he said.

"We came unstuck royally last Saturday and, in hindsight, you can look back and say if it had been a scruffy 1-0 defeat, people could have hid behind it. But the way it went meant there was no hiding place.

"The players had to go out and perform. Credit to them. They've been bold, brave and put on a performance they can be very proud of."

Curle is unlikely to make wholesale changes tomorrow after Tuesday's strong display, with influential loan striker Jamie Proctor set to continue up front.

Mike Jones, who started his first game since returning from injury against Donny, should also keep his place in midfield, and John O'Sullivan should be fit despite coming off with a knock on Tuesday.

O'Sullivan caught the eye with his display on just his third Blues appearance, setting up Nicky Adams' stunning opening goal, and Curle believes there is much more to come from the ex-Blackburn winger.

"John's all-action," the manager said. "He is still adjusting to his environment and the players around him, and there's still more to come.

"With and without the ball, he's still learning how we want him to play, in different variants of formation. He's got that explosive power to get away from someone, the pace to be a threat in behind, he can shift and move the ball well, but it's that willingness to work and be a threat that will cause teams problems."

Curle will assess keeper Max Crocombe, who was absent from Tuesday's squad with a minor back problem, before tomorrow's game. Youth keeper Morgan Bacon will again be on standby to join the bench.

Curle, meanwhile, plans to invite some trialists back to United for another reserve friendly next week.

United's youth team are at Rochdale tomorrow, kick-off 11am.
