The chairman of Carlisle United's London-based supporters' group is getting on his bike to raise cash for Tony Hopper's motor neurone disease charity campaign.
Ian Jardine is set to tackle the 40-mile St Albans Charity Cycle Ride next month.
He hopes to raise sponsorship that will boost former Carlisle and Workington player Tony's "fightback fund" for the MND Association's north and west Cumbria group.
The Carlisle United Supporters' Club London Branch have already shown their support to brave Tony's appeal to raise funds and awareness for the charity with a large banner now on display at the Waterworks End at Brunton Park.
Ian hopes his cycling challenge in Hertfordshire can further help Tony's cause, which has so far raised more than £36,000 to help those in this area who are affected by MND.
Ian said: "For a number of years my son has suggested that I take part in the local (to me) St Albans Charity Cycle Ride.
"I have always had a good reason for declining. This year I seemed to have a good reason to give it a go so that I could help the Tony Hopper Fightback Fund.
"I now cycle nearly every day as part of my constant exercise routine to deal with the lack of cartilage in my right knee and osteoarthritis in both of them.
"The 40-mile route will represent a challenge; particularly given I lost nearly all of last summer due to severe problems with my knees. But challenges are only there to be met and overcome.
"I shall be using an elderly Dawes bicycle I discovered in the excellent Recycle centre in one of the arches below Carlisle Station and behind the swimming pool.
"As well as restoring bicycles the centre offers employment opportunities. I calculate the bicycle and I will have a combined age of over 150, possibly the oldest partnership taking part in the ride."
The ride, on Sunday, May 13, starts and finishes at Oaklands College Campus in St Albans. For more details visit www.saccr.co.uk .
Tony was diagnosed in January last year with bulbar-onset MND. The News & Star is backing his inspirational charity efforts with our Fighting Back for Tony campaign.
