Carlisle United boss Keith Curle says the fate of Hartlepool should be a warning to those supporters who regularly call for managerial change.

The Monkey Hangers are staring relegation to non-league in the face with two games of the season to go.

The north-east club last week sacked manager Dave Jones, with experienced defender Matthew Bates taking charge assisted by Stuart Parnaby, Ian Gallagher and ex-United striker Billy Paynter.

Five different managers have lost their jobs at Victoria Park since Curle arrived at United in September 2014.

And the Blues boss, who has faced some criticism from fans amid United's slide down the top half of the table in 2017, said of the relegation picture: "It is not only Newport's resurgence - it is how poorly other teams around them have done as well.

"The results Hartlepool have got have seen them dragged into it and another manager has lost his job.

"Sometimes you need to look at your neighbours and [think], be careful what you wish for. People say get a new manager, get a new manager, but if it doesn't improve the results, then what? Get a new manager again?

"It doesn't always work. Sometimes you need to buy into what somebody's bringing to the football club, back your judgement and stick with it."

Curle, meanwhile, insisted he felt no extra "pressure" given all that was riding on today's game.

But he again said he was disappointed that his team's promotion push this season had not been backed by bigger crowds.

He said: "We need bums on seats. Probably the biggest disappointment - and this isn't a club view, it's my personal view - I wanted more people in at Brunton Park.

"The football we've been serving up, the record-breaking start, the games we were winning, the position in the league - I thought it merited more, bigger support."

Curle added that the size of financial incentives he offered signings last summer had not been "levelled out" by the increased gate receipts he had expected as a result of bringing in such players.

United's boss, meanwhile, says decisions on the club's second-year youth players will be revealed next week.
