Grant Holt has backed Richie Bennett to be a success at Carlisle United - and said people must be patient with the ex-Barrow hitman.

Bennett returns from a three-match suspension for the Blues against high-flying Notts County at Brunton Park this weekend.

The summer signing is still waiting for his first United goal having made 14 appearances so far.

Former top-flight frontman Holt, though, believes the 26-year-old deserves time to make his mark at Brunton Park.

"I think everyone's got to calm down a little bit and give him the time," said Holt, another ex-Barrow player, who is now player-coach at King's Lynn Town.

"At the time when Glenn Murray was at the club, some said he wasn't good enough - and now everybody would be screaming to have him back in the building because of how good he is.

"You have to remember that the difference between being a part-time player and a full-time professional is really difficult.

"Richie is learning the division and what it's about.

"He'll get one going in off his backside that goes in the corner, and he'll be fine after that. You just need that first one.

"I had something similar at Hibs last year. I was playing well, creating chances and doing good stuff for the team, but goals weren't coming.

"They did eventually and, as long as you are doing your bit for the team, you're fine."

Bennett's season was interrupted by his red card at Crawley, while manager Keith Curle has since brought in Cumbrian Steven Rigg to increase his attacking options.

The £50,000 summer signing, though, must continue to have faith in his game, Holt believes.

"He needs to keep doing exactly what he knows, and if he does that, I think he'll be fine," the ex-Norwich favourite, from Harraby, said.

"I've seen him play twice this year and both times I've been impressed with him.

"You need to give players time to progress. You can't expect him to come in and perform miracles.

"He needs to bed in and settle over a period of time."

Oldham-born Bennett will hope to have found goal-scoring form in time for Carlisle's FA Cup first-round tie against his former club, League One's Oldham, who appointed Richie Wellens as their permanent boss yesterday.
