Carlisle United's FA Cup hosts St Albans City have explained their u-turn over a ticket price hike for the first round tie.

The National League South club faced criticism from fans after raising the cost of entry above their normal prices.

But they then issued revised prices - in line with their usual prices - just 24 hours later for the Sunday, November 6 tie.

The Hertfordshire club insisted the initial prices were raised because of the extra costs involved in staging the game.

The climbdown followed a series of complaints on social media.

Speaking to the Herts Advertiser, St Albans co-owner Lawrence Levy said the initial prices were "arrived at taking into account the significant increased cost of hosting this fixture, including Carlisle’s travel and accommodation costs, increased health and safety measures and additional staffing for the day.

“It is a very rare opportunity for the club to not lose money.

“We then decided to amend the prices to try and balance the opportunity to generate well-needed funds against making this game accessible to all in the community, including our most loyal supporters, and particularly those who benefit from our concessions.”

Ticket prices are now £17/£15 (adults), £12/£10 (concessions) and £7/£5 (under 16s). They are yet to go on sale at Brunton Park.

The game, which kicks off at 2pm, is being featured on the BBC's Final Score programme which will earn United a £12,500 broadcast fee.

St Albans' Clarence Park stadium has a capacity of 5,007 with seating for 667.

United's FA Youth Cup first round tie at FC United of Manchester will be played on Tuesday, November 1 with a 7.45pm kick-off.

Admission at Broadhurst Park is £5 (adults), £3 (concessions), £1 (under-18s).
