Carlisle United winger Nicky Adams has made the shortlist in the race to be named League Two's best player in the north west.

The wide man, 31 today, is among four players nominated after a public vote.

The Blues star will find out whether he has won the award at the Northwest Football Awards ceremony next month.

Adams is up against Michael Rose of Morecambe, Blackpool’s Kelvin Mellor and Accrington Stanley’s Sean McConville for the fourth-tier prize.

Some of the Premier League's top names will also be in the running for awards at the ceremony to be held at The Point, Emirates Old Trafford, on November 13.

In the Premier League player of the year category, Liverpool’s Sadio Mane and Manchester City’s David Silva will compete with other finalists Tom Davies of Everton, Burnley’s Tom Heaton and Manchester United’s Ander Herrera.

In the Championship, Blackburn’s Derrick Williams goes up against Ben Pearson of Preston North End and Dan Burn of Wigan Athletic.

In League One, Fleetwood Town’s Cian Bolger takes on Oldham’s Peter Clark, Callum Camps of Rochdale and Bolton Wanderers’ David Wheater.

In the National League, former Carlisle striker Andy Cook, now with Tranmere, competes with Ryan Astles of Chester, Barrow’s Moussa Diarra and Macclesfield’s George Pilkington.

Those making the rising star shortlist are Alan Browne of Preston, Mitch Hancox of Macclesfield, Ben Tollitt of Tranmere and Premier League trio Trent Alexander-Arnold of Liverpool, Manchester City’s Phil Foden and Angel Gomes of Manchester United.

United's Jack Egan had been among the longlisted contenders for the latter award.

Laura Wolfe, managing director of Wolfesport and the Northwest Football Awards, said: “It’s been another very strong year in the North West footballing world, from non-league right the way through to some of the biggest and most famous clubs on the planet.

“We are really proud of the clubs, people and organisations in our region that are truly leading the way and setting an example for the rest of the UK, across both the men’s and women’s game."
