In-form Jason Kennedy is targeting the most prolific goalscoring season of his career with Carlisle United.

The 30-year-old believes he is capable of hitting double figures for the first time.

Kennedy's aim follows an impressive start to the campaign with Keith Curle's unbeaten side.

The midfielder is on six for the season so far - including United's third goal at Morecambe which Kennedy insists was his rather than an own-goal.

That has seen him already double his total for the whole of last season.

Now the former Bradford and Rochdale man wants to retain the goal touch - and doesn't mind that many of his close-range strikes have been unspectacular.

"No matter how they go in, they all count," Kennedy says.

"As a player you're just glad it's gone over the line. Last season they weren't going in for me but this season they're going in from anywhere.

"I think my highest in a season's seven, so I'm close to that already - hopefully I'll go on past that and maybe even reach the double-figure mark."

Kennedy's early strike at Stevenage last Saturday set United on their way to a record-breaking 14th unbeaten game since the start of the League Two season.

The midfielder has also registered this term against Cheltenham, Cambridge, Colchester and Morecambe.

The latter saw Kennedy net a superb overhead kick, whilst also claiming a goal that appeared to go in off Shrimps defender Aaron McGowan.

Kennedy said: "I'm definitely claiming that one.

"I'm getting all the breaks now, which is a relief. Personally I feel I was getting in those positions last season, but this time things are falling my way.

"The main thing is we're getting the results and winning games in the process."

United will be out to extend their run when Crawley visit Brunton Park this weekend, while the Blues are out to strengthen their hold on an automatic promotion position.

Curle's side are second and five points above the play-off places ahead of the Red Devils' clash.

Kennedy added: "We'll be seen as a scalp for every team, and [Crawley] will want to come and frustrate us, but we've just got to keep doing what we're doing and when we get the breaks, take those opportunities.

"It was the same at Stevenage, which is always a tough place to go - they were always going to have spells in the game, but the lads have stood up to the challenges of these hard-to-play teams.

"From the defenders all the way through to the strikers we've have had to put a shift in, and we got our rewards.

"We probably didn't dominate in possession as much as we'd have liked, but in the end it's all about getting results."

United have yet to confirm the extent of the groin problem that saw captain Danny Grainger substituted as a precaution late in Saturday's game.

But with the skipper suspended this weekend Curle will expect the Cumbrian to be available for the following weekend's FA Cup trip to St Albans City.
