Carlisle United were knocked out of the FA Youth Cup after a valiant 2-1 defeat at Leicester.

Cameron Salkeld gave the young Blues hope at the King Power Stadium with an impressive goal shortly before half-time which halved the hosts' lead.

And Jack Egan almost levelled the fourth round tie two minutes from time but saw his shot hit the crossbar.

It was a dramatic end to an impressive cup run from Darren Edmondson's under-18 side.

Leicester took the lead in the 13th minute when Blues keeper Morgan Bacon's attempted punch from a corner ricocheted into the net off defender Calvin Ughelumba.

They then doubled their lead midway through the first half when Elliot Webber's shot from 25 yards took a big deflection before looping over Bacon.

But Edmondson's side then fought back well and halved the deficit shortly before half-time when Salkeld slotted home from a tight angle after good work from Kieron Olsen.

And they came close to drawing level on the hour mark when Salkeld played Kieran Hall through only for home keeper Cameron Yates to save.

Egan then came agonisingly close to taking the tie into extra-time when his shot from the left hit the woodwork.

The hosts also struck a post in the dying minutes at the end of an entertaining clash.
