Carlisle United are remaining open-minded on the prospect of future summer transfer windows closing before the start of a new season.

The EFL have said the subject will be discussed by clubs at a meeting in September.

It follows the news that the Premier League are expected to approve plans to introduce a new transfer deadline that will prevent clubs from buying players once a season has got under way.

United said it is important to examine the detail of any proposals before making a decision on the idea's merit.

A Blues spokesman said:"It has been highlighted by the EFL that they are going to discuss it at the next meeting in September.

"It will certainly be interesting for the club to hear what the details are and what the proposals entail so we can make a decision on whether to support it going any further."

The EFL have so far said the matter will only be tabled "for discussion" at September's meeting, with no indication at this stage of whether clubs will be asked to vote on any proposal.

But the EFL said in a statement this week that "its board and clubs" have previously expressed the opinion that closing the summer transfer window before the season "would be an improvement on the current position."

United co-owner John Nixon represents League Two clubs on the EFL board.

"It will be important that all the consequences of such a decision are fully considered, as the requirements of our clubs are different to those in Europe’s top flight leagues," the EFL statement added.

Swansea manager Paul Clement, who has seen a transfer saga involving Everton-bound midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson drag on into the season, recently said "most managers" were in favour of the change.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has also spoken out in support of the plan.

The current transfer window closes in two weeks' time, on Thursday, August 31 at 11pm.
