Shaun Miller's first league goal for Carlisle United earned the Blues victory against Wycombe at Brunton Park.

The frontman broke the offside line to run onto Danny Grainger's ball from the left, before calmly beating keeper Jamal Blackman in the 57th minute.

That was enough to clinch three points that extended United's unbeaten start to nine league games.

It took Keith Curle's side up to sixth in League Two, as they survived Wycombe's attempted fightback in which sub Scott Kashket hit the post.

Miller had failed to convert United's best chance in the goalless first half.

The recalled striker was sent clean through by Macaulay Gillesphey's long ball in the ninth minute.

But he hesitated long enough for visiting defender Aaron Pierre to get back and make the tackle.

Pierre was often at the heart of Wycombe's last-ditch defending as they kept the Blues at bay.

United created several further chances with Jason Kennedy going close three times in the space of two minutes.

Charlie Wyke was also denied by keeper Jamal Blackman as he broke onto a Kennedy pass in an often open, end-to-end game.

Wycombe, though, gave United a scare of their own in the 40th minute when Matthew Bloomfield hooked a shot against the post.

Earlier, Michael Harriman curled a shot narrowly wide, while Mark Gillespie saved an Adebayo Akinfenwa header.

Michael Raynes went close after the break while Gillesphey was denied by Blackman after a solo run.

Miller then struck, before Curle brought on Reggie Lambe for Luke Joyce, who had been booked.

With Jabo Ibehre later replacing Miller, the big frontman drew a good save from Blackman, while Kennedy was again denied.

Frontman Charlie Wyke then had to be replaced after failing to shake off a knock; Jamie Devitt coming on for the Blues.

There was almost a controversial leveller for Wycombe in the 81st minute, as ref Seb Stockbridge allowed play to continue despite Grainger being down injured on the left after what the Blues felt was a foul.

Sub Kashket attacked the space behind the prone left-back, and then cut inside before hitting the outside of the post.

Moments later, Dominic Gape went flying in the box but Stockbridge waved away penalty appeals, to the fury of visiting boss Gareth Ainsworth.

Lambe and Tom Miller went close to clinching it late on, while sub Paris Cowan-Hall shot wide as Wycombe failed to breach the Blues.

United go to third-placed Doncaster on Tuesday, where victory or a draw will equal the club's longest unbeaten start to a league campaign.
