Controversial plans to relocate Carlisle United to a city centre location have been shelved, the club confirmed today.

Project Blue Yonder would have seen the club build a new stadium for the Blues to replace Brunton Park.

The location had never previously been confirmed, although it had been widely speculated that bosses were looking at land near Viaduct Estate Road.

In a statement this morning, Carlisle United confirmed that its agreement with Caldew Riverside Developments Limited has expired.

The agreement dates from April 2014 and was extended in October 2015 for a further year.

Chief Executive Nigel Clibbens said: “The developer’s plans were for a scheme on land to the South West of Viaduct Estate Road, between the river Caldew and the railway viaduct.

“The club’s part in the scheme was reliant on a much bigger and wider development of the site. This has not come to fruition.

“As far as we are concerned, we will continue to monitor the situation but we are no longer party to any formal legal arrangement regarding this particular site.”
