Carlisle Utd 0 Rochdale 2: Second-half goals from Steven Davies and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing saw Carlisle United knocked out of the FA Cup by Rochdale.

The League One side became the first team to beat the Blues at Brunton Park this season in the second round tie.

Davies gave them the lead on 49 minutes when his deflected effort beat Mark Gillespie.

And sub Mendez-Laing drilled home a low finish in the third minute of injury-time to send Keith Hill's team into Monday's third round draw.

In front of a 4,426 crowd, Carlisle threw plenty at Dale but struggled to force clear-cut chances, especially once the visitors had edged in front.

In the goalless first half, Gillespie came to Carlisle's rescue with a close-range save from Davies, with Niall Canavan missing a good chance shortly after.

Joe Rafferty had a series of shots blocked for Rochdale, with Davies heading a later chance wide at the far post.

But United also had good attacking spells, Danny Grainger testing keeper Conrad Logan with an early free-kick and Jason Kennedy heading over against his former club.

Michael Raynes was denied with a penalty appeal as he went down under Canavan's challenge, while Keith Keane made timely challenges to deny Wyke and Reggie Lambe.

Kennedy was also flagged offside as he hit the post for the Cumbrians.

Davies then scored four minutes into the second half as his shot from outside the box spun off a defender and looped past Gillespie.

Boss Keith Curle, who had named an unchanged side, brought on Shaun Miller and Jamie Devitt and they briefly inspired a stronger spell from United.

But Miller fired across goal when picked out by his fellow sub, while Charlie Wyke also shot wide from a Devitt cross.

The Blues continued aiming crosses and long throws into the Dale box but further chances were scarce.

The visitors could have wrapped things up through Ian Henderson, who passed up a series of chances.

But they did make the tie safe right at the end, when Rafferty and Henderson fed Oliver Rathbone, whose cross from the right was fired inside the near post by Mendez-Laing.

Meanwhile, the Blues were knocked off the top of League Two by Doncaster, who won 4-3 at Stevenage to move ahead by a point.
