Stevenage 1 Carlisle 0

Stevenage sub John Mousinho dealt Carlisle United's play-off hopes a big blow by firing the only goal 13 minutes from time.

The midfielder, on the pitch for just four minutes, was allowed space to slam Stacy Long's high pass in off the bar.

It was enough to settle a dramatic contest and leaves Carlisle a point adrift of the play-off places and down in eighth, as Stevenage leapfrogged Greg Abbott's side on goal difference with three games to go.

Mousinho's winner came against the run of play, with Carlisle pushing hard for a goal in the second half after Paddy Madden and Andy Welsh - on at the break for JP McGovern and Liam Noble - stretched the hosts.

Danny Livesey had a close range header blocked and Peter Murphy was close with a free kick as Carlisle put the pressure on.

But then Gary Smith's side broke the deadlock.

United chased an equaliser, with Andy Welsh going close and teenage sub Mark Beck in the thick of things in the closing minutes.

But the Blues slipped to a second straight defeat and have failed to score in their last three games.

Carlisle keeper Adam Collin excelled himself in the 22nd minute with a point-blank stop from Jamaal Lascelles' header.

It kept United's goal intact during the first half.

The hosts made much of the early running with a high-energy start, which saw Scott Laird go close and then Craig Reid waste two good openings.

Carlisle eventually grew into the game and Jordan Cook, passed fit to start, went close with a deflected shot after a Francois Zoko nod-down.

Frank Simek then got the Cumbrians out of jail with a great interception from Lascelles' cross.

Stevenage: Day, Wilson, Laird, Ashton, Roberts, Long, Bostwick, Lascelles, Reid, Freeman, Agyemang. Subs: Julian, Myrie-Williams, Mousinho, Slew, Shroot.

Carlisle: Collin, Simek, Murphy, Livesey, Michalik, Taiwo, Berrett, Noble, McGovern, Zoko, Cook. Subs: Robson, Welsh, Madden, Thirlwell, Beck.

Have your say

Greg and Kav have built a top 8 squad on their contacts with the big premiership managers. They've brought in highly skilled players on very low finances.
If the board had been able or willing to dig a bit deeper into their pockets, a couple more key players could have made a massive difference. We should have brought in some back up in January to strengthen the squad, knowing how the lads always tire out in the last few games. The lack of any serious investment in January, despite our push at the top makes me wonder if the board really have the same commitment to succeed as the fans have. We're not talking a fortune.
What happened to all the hype of the new stadium?
Greg and Kav have done fantastically on their meagre budget and i wouldn't be surprised if a club with more resources, finance and commitment come and lure them away.
Then what type of replacement would the Carlisle board be able to afford.
The Carlisle board need to give Greg more to purchase players or lose him.
