Hull City shortlist Carlisle Utd boss Greg Abbott for manager job

Carlisle United boss Greg Abbott is on Hull City’s shortlist over their vacant manager’s post, it emerged today.

Have your say

I hope Greg decides to stay and finish the job. Of course this speculation also depends of where he is in the pecking order at Hull and he may not get far in the interview process with Billy Davis, apparently the odds on favourite.
I think the situation raises two pertinent issues: what are the board prepared to do/ able to do to keep Greg. A transfer kitty and a new contract may well be the minimum.
But even if the worst case should happen and Greg leaves I hope and feel sure he will act in an ethical and honourable way and not seek to cherry pick from the eight existing first teamers who have contracts on the table. I have no doubt at all that even though the players are 'free agents' any such diluting of the first team squad would cast a sour taste on Greg's legacy. I realise the players are in a sitution where they can test the market and I imagine one or two will do so.
I wish we were a richer club who could sign up players much earlier and avoid this process.
Didn't anyone see it coming?
Oh and I see Robeiro from ?Bristol City and Adam Clayton from Leeds are now free agents. Wish you could say that for James Taverier.

no one cares really, only the 3 or 4 thousand who turn up to watch lets face it is a poor standard of footy,, far better going shopping with the misses.

This really is a pointless article. Hull must have a very long list of possible replacements and Gregg will be well down the list. Don't panic David it will never happen.

Relax Carlisle fans.

Despite the odds dropping I really can't see this happening.

Think we'll be appointing Billy Davies or Mick McCarthy; or one of the other Championship's usual suspects.

Further, Nick Barmby has always maintained that he isn't interested in managing any of other club than Hull City.

I would hate for us to lose Greg. I think he's done a sterling job, improving year by year on a shoe string budget. Far better to keep someone we know and trust, who knows the players and has proven he can do well in the market.

It's down to Greg really, if he wants to go the board will probably let him, for a fee from Hull obviously. A replacement would be hard pushed to do as good a job as Greg has with such a low budget. I for one trust him in the market, whether it be loans of permanent transfers that next season could easily be a play off year. Who really knows but HE MUST STAY.

This was always going to happen at some point.
It seems that other clubs, strapped for cash would be looking out for a manager who is prepared to build a united regular squad on a low budget.

1. Would Greg want to go, while he has built up a great squad over the past 3 years.
2. Will the board let him go?
3. If so what fee would they request and where would that go?
4. The other question are how much would they be prepared to pay to get a quality replacement for Greg, bearing in mind the amount they allowed Greg to spend on players?
5. Would another manager want to come here, so far north, with a very restricted budget?
4. Many managers take their staff with them, so would we also lose Graham Kavanagh.
5. Would the existing squad be disrupted and dismantled under new management?
6. Eight players are at this moment considering new deals to work with a manager they respect and trust. How will this gossip influence their decision, especially if he was to leave in mid negotiations.

Taking all these points into consideration, it would be a big mistake to allow Greg to go. He still has a job to do and he's improving every year, as is his squad.
Bringing in a new manager doesn't guarantee success. (John Ward).
It's only speculation at the moment and nothing may come of this anyhow, but if an approach is made to the board and then Greg, i for one, as a true supported will say 'Keep your hands off Greg', he's needed here!

Greg would be a fool to stay here. He has so many players out of contract that he has a fight to. Get the squad back to where it was.

Even if he does this he then has set his stall out that he looks to improve every year - so below 7th on what he claims is one of the lowest budgets in the division will be seen as a failure.

He should not wait to be on people's radar - he should be out there pushing his record and getting a bigger job whilst his stock seems high.

I wouldn't stand in his way. Then again, like many others, I can't stand him!

Please don't go greg

I can understand why Hull are interested and would blame Greg if he went. If he did go I think Nick Barmby should certainly be on our 'hit list' did great job at Hull last season and was very unfairly sacked.
