Charlton boss targets promotion at Brunton Park

Charlton Athletic boss Chris Powell has challenged his players to secure promotion to the Championship with a victory over Carlisle United today.

The Addicks will clinch promotion at Brunton Park today if they win and Sheffield Wednesday fail to beat Colchester.

Back-to-back victories over Easter weekend maintained Charlton’s eight-point lead at the top of League One.

Powell said: “It is about trying to see it across the line now.

“If you got 91 points in past seasons then you were up.

“But the two Sheffield teams are really pushing us and trying their best to get up there.”

Charlton secured maximum points with a 1-0 victory at Oldham last Saturday and a 1-0 win over Walsall at the Valley on Monday.

Powell added: “For us to get three points at Oldham and follow it up with the performance against Walsall, I’m very pleased.

“It is about results and winning ugly at times.

“For us to have another clean sheet and for players to really dig deep, they’re a real credit to this football club.

“No one has gained any ground on us and with four games to go, it’s really pleasing.”

Carlisle boss Greg Abbott believes Charlton deserve to be crowned champions – as they are the best side in League One.

“We will give them the respect they deserve as they are the best team in the division, but we won’t worry too much about them as we will concentrate on our own game,” said Abbott.

“We’ve got to play better than them, work harder than them and try to close them down.

“We’ve really go to cause them problems if we can.

“They have been outstanding all season, they are the stand-out team in the league. They need to get over the line and we hope that might just play a part with a bit of edginess in their play.”

Have your say

I'm stuck in work or I'd be there.

I'm gonna be there, so make sure the rest of you turn out, or you'll have no right to any constructive criticism if Carlisle fail to win today.
I have faith and belief in this team.
So come on lads! Win it for Loy, Chantler and Miller, win it for Greg. Win it for the fans.
But most of all 'WIN IT FOR YOURSELVES!
