Carlisle United today made experienced Notts County defender Mike Edwards their first summer signing.

The 32-year-old centre-half has signed a two-year deal after rejecting an offer to extend his eight-year stay at Meadow Lane.

Edwards joins the Blues on a Bosman free transfer and was unveiled at Brunton Park today.

The former Hull defender has been signed as a direct replacement for Lubo Michalik, who quit United along with midfielder Tom Taiwo today.

Abbott described 6ft Edwards as a "leader" and said he had been a top target since Michalik informed him shortly after the end of the 2011/12 season that he would be leaving.

The defender himself said he had rejected interest from other League One clubs and had joined the Blues because he was impressed by the brand of football they play under Abbott.

"Carlisle are a great footballing team and I jumped at the chance," said Edwards, who played 304 games for Notts and has more than 550 career appearances to his name.

"When I spoke to the gaffer and felt the positivity around the place, it was an opportunity I couldn't turn down."

Edwards is set to compete with Danny Livesey and Peter Murphy for a place in Carlisle's defence next season, with Murphy poised to sign a new deal along with fellow out-of-contract players James Berrett and Frank Simek.

But Taiwo and Michalik have both left after rejecting new terms.

Abbott, meanwhile, said he is closing in on another "experienced" transfer target.

A very good signing. You only need to read the kind things said by the NCFC fans on here. Dont think any CUFC fans will be writing such things on a simular site when Lubo signs for another club!

loosing Tom is a blow, he is a very good player. However last season one of our problems was being to light weight in midfield. Games against teams such as Brentford we were totally dominated in midfield by bigger stronger players. We need to sign a replacement who can dominate more and be more physical Tom was a great tackler and very strong for his size but he was still very small and could often become lost in games.
I dont want Carlisle to become a team of big cart horses like Preston but every great team needs a big strong enforcer in Midfield , just look at Man city! Tommy Miller released by Huddersfield would be perfect!

We also need a right winger to compete with MGovern and another released Huddersfield player Gary Roberts would be perfect!

Then its the mythical goal scorer. CUFC fans must understand that every team in the country wants to sign a sticker this summer! If you have a 25 goal a season player then another bigger club wants to sign him and you need a replacement or clubs like us who dont have one and REALLY REALLY need one! So the chances of us signing a player that scored 25 goals last season is nill as another bigger clun will always be after the same player! We rely on Greg finding a gem from some where who might not have scored many last season or ever but who can if in the right team.

So lets have some faith in Greg, his record for player signings is actually amazingly good. (obvious errors such as Offiong are pretty rear)

If he can sign the 3or 4 we need then it could be a very good season ahead!

Will a new tattoo studio in Carlisle persuade you to get a tattoo?

Yes - I might be tempted

No - I don't like tattoos

I would rather go to a more established studio
