Carlisle United make double transfer swoop

Former Gretna, Hearts and Dundee United left-back Danny Grainger today became Carlisle United's first summer signing - and Hartlepool midfielder Antony Sweeney will join him at Brunton Park.

Grainger, 27, who hails from Eamont Bridge, near Penrith, has signed a one-year deal with his boyhood heroes.

The Cumbrian links up with his former Gretna manager Davie Irons, now Graham Kavanagh's No2 at Brunton Park.

He ended the season on loan at Dunfermline after finding himself out of favour at St Mirren.

Sweeney has agreed a two-year contract and is expected to put pen to paper next month.

The 30-year-old  has made 444 appearances for Hartlepool, where he has spent his entire career.

Kavanagh said: “This is a fresh challenge for Danny and it’s one I know he is looking forward to.

“It’s his local club and I know, from talking to him, that he is determined to make an impact. He’s another who is aggressive, who has ability on the ball and who likes to attack as well as do his main job of defending."

On Sweeney, Kavanagh told the club's website: “Antony fits the type of player we have been looking to recruit this summer.

“He has experience at this level and he’s a man in terms of the way he plays his football. He’s strong and he’s capable of going box-to-box which, in turn, helps when it comes to getting or creating goals."

Have your say

I can hardly believe the rubbish posted by the experts on here moaning about the lack of quality

a proper full back we have been crying out for and a robust box to box midfielder who has been in two promotions out of this league

i suppose they would have been happier with some 18 year old kid released by a premier club we haven't heard off

oh yea and grant holt

get real

Does it matter who switches on Christmas lights?

No. It's always the mayor, isn't it?

I'd rather have Collabro?

Who are Neon Jungle?
